Conceptual design process

Now that we have our foundation, we progress to create the concept for your project.

narrative & program

The deep dive we took during discovery informs the creation of our concept. This will be presented to you in a visual and verbal format, with imagery, words and possibly sketches. It is our script - our outline for how we will make every decision, macro to micro, for your spaces. In essence, we have created the personal “brand” for your project, based on your specific needs. It will be a touchstone on our design journey.

We like to summarize every project into 3 or 4 adjectives that truly capture the concept. Recent examples include “Modern Gothic Tudor”, “Global Modern Minimalism” and “Colorful Swedish Farmhouse”. It is very helpful to reference our concept, so stay “on brand” for you with each choice. Think of this as the artistic, aesthetic portion of the concept.

Concurrently, we will also create a program: the nitty gritty, functional needs of your design that are equally important and vital to the process. This represents the practical aspects of how you want the spaces to work for you. It includes plans and drawings that address your spatial needs, layouts of spaces with major elements, and a review so that everything meets applicable codes and standards for your health, safety and welfare.

The concept and the program should reinforce and complement each other. Ae we refine and shape the interior design elements, we also begin to assemble your team (if not already in place), and revisit your budget, so that we are continually assessing the scope of the project. Preliminary plans, models, concepts, programs and budgets are approved by you.
